Tax Tip

Home Office Deduction

A home office is easier to deduct if it's not physically attached to your home. Normally, to deduct a home office you must show that it is your principal place of business. This rule bars the deduction for a great many people who genuinely use a home office for work, but who also have an office or other place of work elsewhere.

However, this rule does not apply to an office that is a freestanding structure. So if you convert a structure such as an unattached garage or gardener's shed into an office, or construct a new office that is not attached to your home, you can deduct it even if it not your principal place of business--as long as it is used only for business.

Keep accurate records and you will pay less out in taxes each year. By increasing your deductions on several things you will notice this at tax time.

This tip is a starting point for limiting your taxes. All the information is not included here due to space limitations. Always consult a professional before using a tax tip. These tips should be used to ask your CPA or investment advisor about.
